Answer:

Nationalism is the view that nations are the basic units of human society, that they are the only legitimate basis for states and that each nation has the right to its own state. Nationalism is often accompanied by the view that the mixing of nations is evil, and in particular that some nations are in some way "superior" to other nations. This belief or policy has been the basis of nations' persecution of others for centuries and is still very prominent in many parts of the world today. Many wars have been waged because of this policy, and some are in full swing today. A clear example of this was nationalism in Europe, which led to the start of WWI.

What led to the passage of the Alien and Sedition Acts? What made them so controversial?
balandron [24]

The Alien and Sedition Acts (1798) were four laws passed by Federalists that restricted the activities of foreign residents in the country, allowed the government to deport foreigners seen as "dangerous", made it difficult for immigrants to vote, requiring them to reside for 14 years in the U.S. to become eligible to vote, and it prohibited public opposition to the government.

1. What led to the passage of the Alien and Sedition Acts?

The Acts were passed after the diplomatic incident called "XYZ Affair" that almost involved the United States and France in war. Facing French foreign threat, the Federalist President Adams created the acts as a way to prevent subversion in the United States against governmental measures.

2. What made them so controversial?

The Acts, especially the Sedition Act, were so controversial because it violated people's rights of freedom of speech and of the press protected under the First Amendment. Under the acts, anyone who wrote, printed, uttered or published any writing seen as false, scandalous and malicious against the government could be imprisoned or would have to pay fines.

How did the cold war develop in the soviet union europe and the us?
kumpel [21]
The Cold War developed in the Soviet Union, Europe, and the United States due, in large part, to the competition over the arms race and over scientific advancement during the 1970s and 1980s. The Soviet Union pursued communist ideas while the United States and Western Europe followed democratic principles. The Cold War developed as each built up it's military to protect and advance it's own ideology.
