Split into two different countries
A monarchy can rule until death, resigning, or being overthrown. Most are in the same bloodline for generations. An example would be the Tudors started with King Henry VII and ended with his granddaughter Elizabeth I. So this reign was only 3 generations.
He was afraid that Britain would ask for those territories as a part of their armistice so he decided to sell them quickly to the US and earn some money for the country while messing with Britain.
They were all afraid of irritating people (who vote). Since people (who vote) decided their unavoidable future, they didn't want to take any strong stances on anything and just went with the flow and played the tune that the people wanted to hear. They needed to stay in power and not lose it for taking a serious stance..........
