Explanation:

The Hawaiian sugar plantations established their presence in mid  1800s. At that time, they're working alongside the Hawaiian kingdom and obtained permission from the rulers there to establish their business.

The plantation owners soon realized that they could earn more if they took control of the territory rather than having to pay tributes to the Kingdom.

Sanford Ballard Dole led the coup to overthrow Queen Liliuokalani because of this reason, and US government has established a milltuiary base in Hawaii by 1887.
