Spain took gold out of the New World and used it to buy goods from England and the Netherlands.  England the Dutch want to buy tea from China but they had no manufactured goods the Chinese wanted.  But they did have New World gold, so that is what they used to buy tea until the British learned that many Chinese wanted opium, which the British could grown in India and sell along the China coast, despite the wishes of the Chinese government.  This would lead to the Odium Wars.
