At that time, hundreds of thousands settlers from eastern colonies travelled toward western territories with the hope that they can occupy the land and opened up new business for themselves.

Conflicts with Native Americans did occurred during this process. But, most of them happened because the Settlers tried to occupy the land that is considered to be Ancestral land by the native Americans.

From approximately 400,000, the native only killed less than 400. But, the overexaggeration made by the settlers made it sounds like they're constantly hunted by the native Americans.
