Political roles in the midst of the southern theater of war were not always clear for British and Patriot leaders alike. When British Governor William Campbell fled South Carolina in September 1775, British political authority collapsed, leaving the Patriots in nominal control. [1] Soldiers, especially officers for both sides, became de facto political leaders due the existing power vacuum and their inherent authority.
