Beyond the dusty brown yard, in front of the sorry gray house, rose suddenly and shockingly a dazzling strip of bright blossoms,

clumped together in enormous mounds, warm and passionate and sun-gold. What can the reader infer about Miss Lottie based on the description of her home in the excerpt above? Miss Lottie has lost all hope due to the sadness in her life. She is planting marigolds to share with the children in her town. Despite the hardships in her life, Miss Lottie still appreciates beauty; these flowers are a symbol of hope. Miss Lottie’s son, John Burke, likes flowers so she plants him a garden.
