The equation of the line.

Solution :

From the given graph we can see that the line passes through point ( 0,6 ) and ( 4,10 ) .

Also, equation of line passes through two points (x_1,y_1) and ( x_2,y_2) is :

y - y_1 = (\dfrac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1})( x - x_1)

Putting all given values, we get :

y - 6 = (\dfrac{10-6}{4-0})( x -0)\\\\y - 6 = x\\\\y -x = 6

Therefore, the equation of line is y - x = 6 .

That between x = -9 and x = -4 (x = -4,-5,-6,-7,-8,-9), the temperature (T(x) or y) does not change very much. Therefore, around those temperatures is a turning point, where the phase shift occurs from solid/liquid.
