How does Mercutio serve as a foil to Romeo? In the space below, write a 150-word essay comparing and contrasting the two friends
kiruha [24]
Mercutio is much more lighthearted than Romeo, and this is shown over and over again through their discussion in Act 1, Scene 4 before the Capulet ball. Romeo uses phrases like "I have a soul of lead So stakes me to the ground I cannot move," showing that his heart and soul are heavy, keeping him on the ground and not able to dance. Mercutio replies with "You are a lover; borrow Cupid's wings, And soar with them above a common bound." This quote shows that he has a more positive outlook on love than Romeo does. He knows that Romeo is obsessed with love, so he is trying to get him to brighten up and have some fun. This contrast between the two characters continues when Romeo responds, "<span>Under love's heavy burden do I sink." He is using the fact that Mercutio pointed out that he is a lover to prove his despair even more. Mercutio responds with a pun, trying again to lighten the mood.</span>
