Refer to Explorations in Literature for a complete version of this story. In “The Pit and the Pendulum,” the narrator explains,

"The intensity of the darkness seemed to oppress and stifle me." Why does Poe include this description of the narrator's feelings about the darkness?
By having the narrator describe the darkness as a force that has a physical impact on him, Poe helps create a claustrophobic mood and a sense of the narrator's great fear and discomfort.

By having the narrator focus on his own feelings of being oppressed and stifled, Poe establishes the idea that the real danger that the narrator faces exists only in the narrator's mind.

By having the narrator focus on the intensity of the darkness, Poe effectively directs the attention of readers away from the dangers that lurk within that darkness and lays the groundwork for the story's surprise ending.

By having the narrator describe how something as ordinary as darkness bothers him, Poe is able to establish the narrator as an unreliable figure who is prone to exaggerations and lies.

Story " A Modern Love Letter" How does the author of " A Modern Love Letter" create surprise? Cite examples of how the author's
Luba_88 [7]

Answer:

The author makes sudden actions of Bella that would create surprise and also be at suspense for the reader at the same time. The way people call Bella in a letter surprises her because it makes her special to someone. “I bend to retrieve it, surprised to see “My Bella” scrawled ornately across the front.” The author foreshadows to create a flashback of what happened earlier in the short story.

When the author states in the story “I look past him, but Abuela gasps and exclaims, “Alejandro, after all these years!” the author creates surprise and a feeling of the story's climax. When the author uses foreshadowing he makes the main character show emotion and express herself throughout the short story. Small actions like when Bella recognized who is writing to, make her think or foreshadow the past and then she gets surprised as she notices who is likely writing to her.

Why does bradbury reference several authors?
Luden [163]
Throughout his writings, Bradbury used a lot of Text quotations or historical text written by other authors.
He did this so the authors that he Referenced will have the recognition that they deserve and so the readers could know where to look if they wanted to dig deeper to the materials that were referenced.
