For this assessment, you may write either a letter to a friend or family member back home or a guide about immigration for peopl

e hoping to come to the United States, to explain what the process will be like. Your letter or guide should be written from the point of view of an Asian or European immigrant in the early 1900s.
Letter

If you choose to write a letter, be sure to consider the following in your response:

Where are you from?
Why did you leave your homeland?
How was your journey to the United States?
What happened to you when you arrived?
What is your new life like in America? Where do you live and what do you do every day?
What difficulties do you face because of who you are, where you came from, or where you live now?

I am a farmer from the North of Scotland, my home life was bleak and I lost my family in a house fire. I came to New Jersey to start a new life; as each week of the 3 week boat journey across the Atlantic ensued, I shed the old layers of my life, pursuing head-on a new life and beginning. I have managed to find a small community here since I came, I arrived with a suitcase and one handful of money that allowed me to open a small grocery store in the village, I only sell the best produce. People slowly got to know me, I'm not that easy a person, but there were a lot of us that arrived within a few years of each other, and we all help each other out. Sometimes I feel lonely and miss my homeland and people, but the new life here is peaceful and a good new start.

Answer:

My Dear Maria

It has merely been a nice trip from España to this promised land of opportunities. I have seen families from all over and every time, I remember you and our daughter Lola. When I feel like quitting this journey I remind myself what I came here for, I came to make money and get us out of debt. It was not an easy decision but it is better than becoming slaves to the one we owe. These English men are very strange, when I first arrived they didn’t have the same customs as I, they often act like wild animals. I had enough money to open a small grocery shop, I am not very well known yet but everything comes with time. Every morning I wake up in a new land, filled with people of all kinds, on certain occasions we have problems with the Indians and the negritos, those pesky animales. Since the community is somewhat diverse I don’t get much hatred because of who I am. You must understand that this is only the beginning, I will be gone for a very long time and you must be patient. I will miss my family very much every second of my life.

Con amor y deseos, Fernando
