-12 + 5 = -7

Remember, -12 is below 0 on the number chart (see below)

-12, -11, -10, -9, -8, -7, -6, -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5...

So if you start at -12 and move 5 positive numbers to the right, you get to -7.
