Direct variation means that as x gets larger, so does y. How much bigger is determined not only be values of x but also values of k. K is fixed however.
So suppose k =5
then if x = 4
y = 5*4 = 20
if x = 8 then
y = 5 * 8 = 40 just twice as large, but notice that k does not change.
