Los trabajos de Gerschenkron se centraron en el estudio del atraso económico y los procesos de industrialización tardíos. Desde entonces el enfoque comparativo del desarrollo industrial en diversos países ha servido para validar hipótesis sobre la influencia de tal o cual factor en la industrialización. Este enfoque hizo que el análisis se centrara en las naciones-Estado (los países), dada la importancia que el marco institucional y el papel de los Estados han tenido en el desarrollo industrial.
