During the 1877 presidential election, Democrat Samuel J. Tilden feared most of the popular vote, but lost the election because the electoral college elected Republican Rutherford B. Hayes. Obviously, the Democrats did not accept this decision, since it removed the electoral power of the people. To solve this problem, the 1877 compromise was created, in which Hayes was elected, but he undertook to finalize the reconstruction of the south, which was the main campaign promise of the Democrats.
