New traits can be made when there is an error in gene replication, called a mutation. The mutation will give the offspring different genes that might be harmful or beneficial to the organism.
Gene flow happens when any organisms from other places immigrate into the population. If these organisms can reproduce with the local organisms, it will introduce new traits that was not originally come from the population.
