Mockingbird” is a very-personal song in which Eminem is addressing his daughters and in the process reveals private details of their family history as well as his current thoughts and aspirations towards them. In fact in a lot of ways, it can be argued that “Mockingbird” is one of the songs at the foundation of the current emo rap trend, since Eminem was perhaps the first major hip-hop artists to start unveiling such intimate information in his songs. So once again, in this track Marshall is speaking directly to his daughters. He does this specifically within the context of bemoaning the effect that his separation from his wife as well as his touring lifestyle is having on them, as in his inability to see them as often as he would like to.
The song represents the struggles of a transgender male. "I'll hide my chest" "I'll cut my hair" signify they are transitioning to male. They are most likely experiencing gender dysphoria. Some of the lyrics have small hints to depression and/or committing "life take", such as "Little do we know the stars welcome him with open arms" and "sometimes i think I'm dead". The part where it says, "I cannot fall in love" may suggest having troubles finding love because of his being trans or he may possibly be asexual or something. *deep breath* that took a while.
The theme is universal - we all want to make things sound better than they are. That's why when someone asks you "Does this dress make me look fat?" you always say no, even if it does. We want the world to sound better because if we really focused on how bad the world is then no one would want to live in it. But not all writing does make things sound better than they actually are. Some writing is really depressing and makes things sound as bad or worse than they are.
