it is two because + this symbol means adding something to another thing, or combining them to get a number higher than before. (negative or positive) in this case it is two ones. so imagine two circles O O. they are separate now but once a + symbol is put in between them, they have to be added. like this: O+O. if each circle is one, then putting two next to each other, or adding them gets two.
