If you are talking about settlers who went to America...
The first settlers came to escape religious persecution (the pilgrims), and eventually they also got tired of British rule so they wanted to separate from Britain. Later settlers came because they wanted to seek freedom in the new world that they didn't receive in their own old homeland.
