Once a material forms into an igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary rock, it's not necessarily going to remain that type for it's whole lifespan. In fact, a rock's type can be almost entirely determined by the type of processes it's exposed to, which means that it's type can change after formation, albeit very slowly. For some examples, the erosion of igneous and metamorphic rocks create sediments, which can become sedimentary rock. Metamorphic and sedimentary rocks that get melted and frozen become igneous rocks. Igneous and sedimentary rocks that become buried and undergo the process of metamorphism can become metamorphic rocks. All of these different processes, as well as some others, comprise the Rock Cycle.
