A literary device can be defined as any technique used by speakers and authors (writers) to significantly emphasize on their writeups or compositions and express their ideas, opinions or thoughts to the audience.

The main purpose of a literary device is to convey more information and enable the readers or listeners have a deeper understanding of the piece. Some of the literary device used in English literature are; resolution, plot, paradox, soliloquy, setting, tragedy, comedy, epiphany, theme, falling action, rising action, simile, metaphor, parody, utopia, anecdote, pseudonym, essay, analogy, hyperbole, oxymoron, personification, pun, sarcasm, contrast, connotations, genre, fiction, epic, inference, foreshadowing, exposition, etc.

A plot simply describes the order of events in a literary work such as a play.

The five (5) main elements of a plot include the following;

I. Introduction (Exposition): it marks the beginning of a play or story. This is where the characters, background, and setting used in a play are revealed.

II. Rising action: it includes a series of events that build interest and includes suspense, tension, struggles, and/or drama. The events in the play becomes complicated and the conflict is exposed or revealed; creating suspense, tension and drama in the mind of the audience or reader. Rising action is between the introduction and climax of a play.

III. Climax: it's marks the turning point of events in a play or story.

IV. Falling action: the events in the play begins to fall in place while all loose ends come to a close.

V. Resolution: this is the part of a play in which all conflicts are resolved. This ultimately implies that, it marks the end of a play, as conflict between the protagonist and antagonist is resolved.

In conclusion, exposition also referred to as introduction is typically used by authors or writers to provide background information, setting and information about the characters in a literary work such as a play or drama.
