Negro Fort was a fort built by the British in 1814, during the War of 1812, on the Apalachicola River, in a remote part of Spanish Florida. It is part of the Prospect Bluff Historic Sites, in the Apalachicola National Forest, Franklin County, Florida.


The fort was called Negro Fort only after the British left in 1815, its later residents and staff were primarily blacks (free Negroes or fugitive slaves), together with some Choctaws. There were a significant number of maroons already in the area before the fort was built[citation needed] and beginning in 1804 there was for several years a store (trading post) there. The blacks, having worked on plantations, knew how to plant and care for crops, and also to care for domesticated animals, mostly cattle.

Gen. José de San Martín, an Argentinian statesman and national hero who helped free some countries from the Spanish rule in the early 1800s.

San Martín intended to ensure Argentina’s independence by destroying the remaining Spanish power in South America, to reach his purpose he helped achieve Peru's independence as well.

After his army had been defeated in Upper Peru (now Bolivia), San Martín determined to surround the Spaniards by liberating Chile and using it as a base for a seaborne attack on Peru. The campaign waged in Chile was successful, gaining Chile's independence in 1818, which allow the Argentinian leader to occupy the Peruvian port of Pisco in September 1820. When the Spanish government withdrew his forces into the interior of Peru, San Martín entered Lima and after several battles, the country's independence was declared on July 28, 1821.

However, after that, several battles had to be fought to ensure independence. In those battles, Simón Bolívar, another South American hero, was a key element that helped free the country completely.
