Answer:

Well from what I learned they where taken from their tribes and they where sold and where taken on ships and went to be sold to someone else ( but on the boat most of them died from diseases and other things) the boat had separated each person from their gender ( females where on one side with their kids and males where on the other side) so the ones that did live where sold to anyone who wanted them.
