During the great depression era, social workers and group of activists believe that the unregulated private sectors contributed greatly to the cause of the depression and advocated for government involvement in providing direct help of the poorest Americans.

This became one of the reason of The creation of the new deal in 1930s as a solution for the depression. With the new deal, the government provided a lot of government funded jobs that help bring the unemployment rate down.
