Worst of all, the British now began levying taxes against American colonists.  The British point of view is not difficult to grasp.  principles of the common law, and acts of Parliament, but from the British constitution. The Stamp Act was very unpopular among colonists. A majority considered it a violation of their rights as Englishmen to be taxed without their consent—consent that only the colonial legislatures could grant. Their slogan was "No taxation without representation"

In 1651, the British Parliament, in the first of what became known as the Navigation Acts, declared that only English ships would be allowed to bring goods into England, and that the North American colonies could only export its commodities, such as tobacco and sugar, to England.The English Navigation Acts, which were passed in the 17th and 18th centuries, restricted foreign trade by England's colonies.
