The Southern states believed they had the right to leave the United States. The U.S. government did not agree and used military force to impose its will on the states.

Explanation:

I believe this is the right answer, mainly because the Southern states didn't agree with the Northern states when they wanted  to abolish slavery. they would loose free workforce in their crops, they were also other factors involved, such as taxation
