There had always been tension between the Hindus and Muslims in India. When it was made known that the British rule would end, it was decided that the majority of the Hindus would stay in India while the Muslims would transfer to the newly created Pakistan. More than ten million people had to leave their homes and move to the other state. Having so many refugees created riots between the Hindus and the Muslims and more than a million people died.

What geographic features outlined the area of the third westward surge?
Sonja [21]

The third westward surge was outlined by the Mississippi River and the Pacific Ocean.

Explanation:

When the British established their colonies in North America, they were all located on the East Coast. The people remained on the East Coast for quite some though and they were not migrating to the west. This started to gradually change, with the main reasons being that the safety issues started to get solved, and that the means of transportation improved.

The first and second westward surges didn't really went a lot to the west, but the people were relatively close to the East Coast, mostly settling between the Mississippi River and the Appalachian Mountains. The third westward surge though was on a much more larger scale and on a much larger territory, with people settling between the Mississippi River and the Pacific Ocean, or around two thirds of what is now the United States.

The people started to move in in this part because:

  • The conflicts with the Indian tribes were mostly solved
  • The government was granting large portions of land for very little money
  • The territory became American after the territory was conquered
  • Lot of opportunities opened up for the people

They both had similar view of justification to god by faith. Luther thought that no good works were enough to reach salvation. Calvin had the idea that there was two group of people; the Elect and the non-Elect, which were chosen by God to be saved or not. Predestination was a key idea in Calvin's theology. He believed everything was already planned before even you were born. Luther believed that the state and the church should be separated. While on the other hand Calvin believed that the state and the church should not be subject to one another and vice versa.

Hope this gets you some ideas!
