Earhart was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932. She received the United States Distinguished Flying Cross for this accomplishment. In 1928, Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly as a passenger across the Atlantic Ocean. There weren't many female pilots back then, and her actions inspired other women to follow their dreams. She was born July 24, 1897 in Atchison, KS  and died on January 5, 1939.
