Though set in present day, it is a prequel to Parker's venerable Spenser series of novels. Unlike the rest of the Spenser series, Chasing the Bear is a young adult novel and not strictly detective fiction.
The reason why the Mongols withdrew form Asia was because of horrible weather conditions and diseases. If I had to pick, I would pick A.) Diseases because A is more severe then the weather conditions.
