Considering the fact that Atomic Bombs were a fairly new concept, it likely was an eye-opener for the Soviet Union, in the way that they felt threatened at the fact that such a weapon existed and had been possessed by another entity. And so, this essentially describes the Cold War in a nutshell, as the tension between the two powers of the world (the US and the USSR) set out for an arms race.
