The first permanent settlement in America was Jamestown colony in 1607.

The Virginia colony became a success in cultivating Indian Tobacco. Tobacco in Virginia considered being the gold which helped the settlers to survive and prosper in the colony. The successful of tobacco cultivation helped the planters in converting land into large acres to cultivate.

Virginia establishes the first colonial legislature as the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1619. The members of Burgesses elected respectively. The white men with prosperity and property able to choose the representatives. William Byrd, Peyton Randolph, George Washington, Edmund Pendleton, Thomas Jefferson, and Patrick Henry were some of the representatives in the Virginia House of Burgesses.

Slavery was more common in the Carolinas as they were agriculture-based economy. Settlers in Carolinas were planters who required workers to work in their farms. They relied on slaves because they were affordable.
