La momificación es un procedimiento medico mortuorio que impide que el cuerpo se descomponga al tratarlo a través de diversos procedimientos. En Egipto, el proceso se realizaba al sacar los órganos internos del difunto, bañarlo con aceites vegetales, colocarlo al sol y cubrirle con diversos vendajes. El único órgano que se dejaba al interior del cuerpo era el corazón.

El proceso de momificación tenía un carácter ritual en Egipto. Se consideraba que se debía conservar el cuerpo intacto para que en el más allá el alma se uniera al cuerpo.

Para los Egipcios el corazón era la parte más importante del cuerpo humano, pues ahí se producían los pensamientos y sentimientos, es por esto que se conservaba en el cuerpo durante la momificación.
