Like mitosis, meiosis also has distinct stages called prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. A key difference, however, is that during meiosis, each of these phases occurs twice — once during the first round of division, called meiosis I, and again during the second round of division, called meiosis II

Because of recombination and independent assortment in meiosis, each gamete contains a different set of DNA. This produces a unique combination of genes in the resulting zygote. Recombination or crossing over occurs during prophase I.The process of meiosis happens in the male and female reproductive organs. As a cell divides to form gametes: A copy of all of the genetic information is made. The cell divides twice to form four gametes, each with a single set of chromosomes (haploid ).
