The Cabinet of the United States is composed of the main positions of the executive branch of the Federal Government of the United States, whose existence dates back to the time of George Washington, the first president of the United States, who appointed a Cabinet of five persons: Thomas Jefferson (Secretary of State), Alexander Hamilton (Secretary of the Treasury), Henry Knox (Secretary of War), Samuel Osgood (Chief of the Postal Service) and Edmund Randolph (Attorney General), for advice and assistance in their duties. The members of the Cabinet are nominated by the president and presented to be ratified by the United States Senate by simple majority. If approved, they are sworn in and receive the appointment of secretary (all except the attorney general) and begin their duties.
