move the variable to it's own side.

5 3/4 - 4 1/2 = 1/6x

change the subtracting side to have common denominators

5 3/4 - 4 2/4 = 1/6x

1 1/4 = 1/6 x

divide both sides by 1/6, same thing as multiplying both sides by 6 (reciprocal)

30/4 = x

reduce: 15/2 = x
