Roman citizenship was obtained by birth if both father and mother were Roman citizens, although one of them, normally the mother, might be an alien (an outsider) with the right to confine a Roman marriage. Unless, citizenship could be awarded by the people, later by officers and emperors. Both men and women were citizens in the Roman Republic.
