The range of a function basically represents all of the y values that a function encompasses (I hope that makes sense, if not, please let me know).
In this graph, since the parabola has a vertex at (1, -4), the range includes y values only greater than or equal to -4. The function does not include y values lower than -4. Therefore, the range must be y ≥ -4.
