The Catholic Church answered with the so-called Counter Reformation, whose main goal was to recover the strength of the Church and to regain influence.

Explanation:

This started with the Council of Trent. Church needed certain changes, and two were enacted as  the most important ones. The first was to rid the church of all abuses that existed and the second one was to uphold the beliefs of the Church. The best results were given when some new religious orders, such as Jesuits were formed with the goal to repress Protestantism.
