She has to do a lot of things, and all of them are described in a relatively short paragraph. All of that contributes to the sense of urgency.
The central ideas of the first six chapter might be that he was born in a workhouse and his mother died after giving birth to him. But the nurse argued that she was found dead the night before. He was sent tho a branch workhouse for juvenile offenders were he really suffered. at his 9th birthday he was sent back the the first workhouse. He suffered for starvation. He attended Mrs Sowerberry´s funeral. Finally and epidemic occurred and he gained a lot of experience in the undertaking business.
