Answer:

Wiglaf is the only man who stands by Beowulf in the final battle against the dragon. Every other soldier abandoned Beowulf and left him to die at the hands of the dragon, even though he was quite old at this point and no longer the hero he used to be. However, Wiglaf stood by him and helped him defeat the dragon. He is a symbol of courage and loyalty and he encouraged the other soldier to fight on, seeing his bravery.
