What is Prufrock's opinion of modern cities? How do you know, and how does this help to reveal a theme?

Sample response: Prufrock thinks modern cities are shallow and lonely. On his walk he describes the seediest places, like cheap motels and bars with sawdust on the floor, and by the end of the poem he hasleft the city altogether. He feels isolated in the city, disconnected, and almost disgusted.Prufrock intermixes thoughts about the city throughout the entire poem; besides the Michelangelo room, it is the most mentioned place. The city seems not to be a place that Prufrock enjoys. He uses negative words like "muttering", "restless", "tedious", and "insidious" to describe it.

kykrilka [37]

Answer: D. The narrator turns away from the war memorial wall.

Explanation:

In this excerpt from Facing It , a poem by Yusef Komunyakaa , the author refers to the granite wall in Vietnam Veterans Memorial, where the names of soldiers who died in Vietnam can be found. The poem conveys his own feelings when he remembers the traumatic events from the past. As he describes, the stone (being the wall) "lets him go", but he faces it again when he turns around.
