रोम में एन्ड्रोक्लीज़ नामक गुलाम अपने मालिक से परेशान होकर जंगल में भाग गया। वहाँ उसकी मुलाकात एक घायल शेर से हुई। शेर बार बार अपना पंजा उठा रहा था।
पहले तो एन्ड्रोक्लीज़ डरा फिर साहस कर उसके पास गया और उसके पंजे में फँसा काँटा उसने निकाल दिया। शेर ने उसके हाथों को चाटकर आभार प्रकट किया और फिर जंगल में चुपचाप चला गया।
एक दिन मालिक के आदमियों ने एन्ड्रोक्लीज़ को ढूंढ निकाला और पकड़कर सम्राट् के पास ले गए। सम्राट ने उसे भूखे शेर के सामने डलवाने की आज्ञा दी।
सारी जनता के सामने एन्ड्रो क्लीज को एक खुले मैदान में लाया गया। एक भूखा शेर दौड़ता हुआ आया पर एन्ड्रोक्लीज़ पर आक्रमण की जगह उसका हाथ चाटने लगा। वस्तुतः यह वही शेर था जिसके पंजे से एन्ड्रोक्लीज़ ने काँटा निकाला था। वह एन्ड्रोक्लीज़ को पहचान गया था।
आश्चर्यचकित सम्राट को एन्ड्रोक्लीज़ ने पूरी घटना सुनाई। सम्राट् ने उसे क्षमा कर आजाद कर दिया और शेर को जंगल में छुड़वा दिया।
