A big similarity was that both medieval Europe and Japan employed feudalism; roughly summarized in Europe as: King --> Clergy --> Nobles --> Knights (Vassals) --> Serfs; summarized in Japan as: Emperor --> Shoguns --> Daimyo --> Samurai (Vassals) --> Serfs.
