The Zimmerman Telegram was one of the reasons that pushed the United States Congress to declare war on Germany.

Further Explanation:

The contents of the Zimmerman Telegram convinced the United States Congress that it had to abandon its neutral stance and declare war on Germany. The very contents of the Telegraph threatened the sovereignty and security of the United States by Germany. During the First World War, the United States did not engage in direct military combat but emerged as the major supplier of arms and ammunition and the financier of the war effort for the Allies. Germany was confident of winning a short battle, but the USA’s supplies kept the Allied Forces afloat. She was afraid of the USA joining the war, and thereby sought a diplomatic alliance with Mexico, urging the Mexican Government to attack the United States, promising to provide them with troops, arms, and ammunition. The German Government tried to secure the support of the Mexican Government by promising her the territories lost in the Mexican American war.

Perception of intelligence was one of the most crucial tasks during the World War, which determined the political stances of most nations. The successful decoding of the Zimmerman Telegram revealed Germany’s true intentions in securing Mexico as an ally, and the United States Congress was convinced that a war with Germany was imminent, especially after German naval warfare, resulting in the loss of countless American lives. The German Foreign Secretary confirmed the truth of the contents of the Telegram, citing the U.S. Declaration of war on Germany as the reason, which compelled Germany to take necessary steps for her own defense. The doubts of the American citizens regarding the authenticity of the Telegram and regarding it to an instrument of deception by the British intelligence to involve the United States in European warfare was soon extinguished with personal confirmation from Zimmerman, and Germany’s commitment to unrestricted submarine warfare, which they hoped would bring the United States within the realm of the war.

The Zimmerman Telegram convinced Congress to declare war on Germany.

Further Explanation:

The Zimmerman Telegram was supposed to be a secret message between the German and Mexican government. The German government sent this to the Mexican government in hopes of creating an alliance. The Germans wanted Mexico to invade the United States. At this time, Germany was scared that the United States was going to join the Allied powers in World War I. To distract them, Germany wanted Mexico to invade. If Mexico did invade, and Germany won World War I, then Germany promised to give Mexico back the land they lost to the United States after the Mexican American War.

This plan was ruined when the telegram was intercepted by the Allied powers and relayed to the American government. After this, the American government felt they had no choice but to declare war on Germany. The US officially entered World War I in 1917.

Besides the Zimmerman Telegram, there were other events that helped to spark America's entrance into this war. An example of this would be the sinking of the Lusitania (see below for more information).

This means that when you push on a wall, the wall pushes back on you with a force equal in strength to the force you exerted.
