The dominant political system in the Middle Ages was known as Feudalism. It was when nobility held lands for the crown and in turn pledged military service to the Crown. Vassals were servants to the nobles and serfs worked the land and gave the nobles a share of the produce, in exchange for Miltary protection.
Citizens were not intelligent and deprived of their rightful education. Because they were not educated, the Monarch could make them believe anything they wanted to. A popular form of this was what Monarch's called their Divine Right. This was where the Monarch "brainwashed" the citizens to believe that God had said that that person should rule.
