On one side, women who believed the Fifteenth Amendment did apply to women and were willing to work with blacks to test the amendment. The other side believed blacks were responsible for women not getting the right to vote and their new mission was to achieve an amendment specifically giving women the right to vote.
So before the civil war Abraham Lincoln focused more about preserving then union than freeing the slaves. Abraham Lincoln did not want to expand slavery but did not want to end it immediately either. Only during the civil war did Abraham Lincoln say he would free the slaves to motivate his troops and also find a better cause in winning the war and getting support.
