Answer: Most tsunamis are generated by shallow, great earthquakes at subductions zones. More than 80% of the world's tsunamis occur in the Pacific along its Ring of Fire subduction zones.Many areas of tsunami high risk tend to be coastal regions around the Pacific Ocean: Chile and Peru, West Coast USA, Japan, and New Zealand.Eighteen (18) countries around the Indian Ocean sustained damage from the tsunami. The countries affected were Indonesia, Thailand, India, Sri-Lanka, Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Maldives, Reunion Island (French), Seychelles, Madagascar, Mauritius, Somalia, Tanzania, Kenya, Oman, South Africa and Australia.
