James Meredith was a black American who had been studying at Jackson  State College between 1960 to 1962. Within that time frame, he had applied severally to the University of Mississippi also known as 'Ole Miss' only to be met with rejection.

In 1961, Meredith collaborated with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to file a racial discrimination lawsuit against the University of Mississippi. When the case was appealed at the United States Supreme Court in September 1962, the judgment was ruled in favor of James Meredith.
