The united states was in a state of depression after the massive number of deaths in ww1. No one wanted to enter another war.  They felt it was better to let europe handle there own battle.

That is why the Allies chose to land in Normandy, closer to the bases in England, and its open beaches not as heavily defended as in the North.

The code name for Normandy was "Operation Overload."
