On these expeditions, when they found an animal or specimen, they would send them back to the known part of the USA. Some of these specimens were alive, but most were parts and bones. With these specimens, people back home could eat new food from these new animals, find new ways to defend themselves from these wild beasts, and it strongly influenced the progress of science.
